Purpose – This study examines the role of storytelling as a developmentally appropriate pedagogical strategy for integrating anti-corruption education into early childhood education (ECE), with particular emphasis on fostering moral values and character development from an early age.
Design/methods/approach – This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach based on a literature review of relevant scholarly publications and previous research on anti-corruption education, moral development, and storytelling in early childhood education. The literature was analyzed thematically to identify the potential contributions of storytelling to the development of anti-corruption values and behaviors among young children.
Findings – The analysis identified that storytelling provides an engaging and developmentally appropriate medium for introducing abstract anti-corruption concepts through concrete and meaningful narratives. The integration of values such as honesty, discipline, responsibility, fairness, courage, care, hard work, independence, and simplicity into stories can support children's moral understanding and provide contextualized opportunities to recognize and practice ethical behavior. However, anti-corruption education remains insufficiently implemented systematically in many early childhood settings, indicating a need for more structured and consistent pedagogical practices that connect moral values with children's everyday experiences.
Conclusion – Storytelling can serve as a meaningful pedagogical approach for strengthening anti-corruption education in early childhood by transforming abstract ethical principles into accessible and relatable learning experiences. Its effectiveness depends on developmentally appropriate narratives, teacher facilitation, and opportunities for children to apply moral values in daily interactions.
Contribution – This study contributes to the early childhood education literature by conceptualizing storytelling as a practical pedagogical pathway for integrating anti-corruption values into children's moral and character development. It also highlights the need for systematic implementation of anti-corruption education within ECE curricula and classroom practices to establish ethical dispositions from an early age.
