Purpose – This study examines the implementation of buying and selling activities as a developmentally appropriate learning strategy for integrating anti-corruption values into early childhood education (ECE), with particular emphasis on fostering honesty, fairness, responsibility, and discipline among young children.
Design/methods/approach – This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach to explore the implementation of buying and selling activities in the natural learning context of TK An-Naja Surabaya. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with teachers, and documentation. The data were analyzed descriptively to identify how buying and selling activities were designed and implemented to promote anti-corruption character development.
Findings – The findings indicate that buying and selling activities are implemented as enjoyable, experiential learning experiences that simulate everyday economic interactions. Children participate actively as both buyers and sellers, allowing them to practice honesty, fairness, responsibility, and discipline through role-play transactions. The activities also provide opportunities for children to understand the importance of accountability, transparency, and fair treatment in social and economic interactions. In addition, participation in these activities supports children's social-emotional development, communication skills, cooperation, and decision-making.
Conclusion – Buying and selling activities can serve as a meaningful pedagogical strategy for introducing anti-corruption values in early childhood by connecting moral principles with concrete and familiar experiences. Through guided role-play and teacher facilitation, children can develop an early understanding of honesty, fairness, responsibility, and ethical behavior in everyday interactions.
Contribution – This study contributes to the early childhood education literature by highlighting experiential buying and selling activities as a practical pathway for integrating anti-corruption character education into classroom practice. It demonstrates how simulated economic activities can provide meaningful contexts for developing ethical dispositions and supporting the early prevention of corrupt behavior.
